Washington – ATIS today announced the release of its PSTN Transition Focus Group Assessment and Recommendations, the only comprehensive industry resource outlining the key considerations for decision makers on all aspects of the communications network’s evolution from time division multiplex (TDM) technology to internet protocol (IP). The Assessment and Recommendations report provides an overview of the current state of the communications network and discusses the opportunities for more robust communication capabilities that successor networks will deliver. “Beyond providing insight into technical matters, ATIS sees the Assessment and Recommendations report as an essential vehicle for better understanding how the networks of the future can reach their full potential,” said ATIS President and CEO Susan M. Miller. “The report’s comprehensive findings will be of incredible value as our industry advances the transition to IP-based services.” ATIS’ Technology and Operations Council established the PSTN Transition Focus Group (PSTN-FG) to assess issues related to this evolution, and provide guidance on critical network transition challenges. In its work, the PSTN-FG assessed challenges based on four key areas associated with the evolution: application services, access, transport and numbering. Work set forth in the report’s recommendations will progress initially through ATIS’ Packet Technologies and Systems Committee, which develops and recommends standards and technical reports related to services, architectures, and signaling, in addition to related subjects under consideration in other North American and international standards bodies. The PSTN Transition Focus Group Assessment and Recommendations is available for purchase from the ATIS Document Center—a leading resource for worldwide technical operations standards for communications technologies produced by ATIS Committees and Forums.
