ATIS today announced that its Wireless Technologies and Systems Committee (WTSC) has completed the transposition of the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) LOC Enabler documents. These specifications, which define how mobile devices (such as smartphones and tablets) securely and efficiently share location information, were previously managed by OMA. WTSC has formally assumed responsibility for the continued maintenance and evolution of the LOC Enabler documents starting in 2025 and into the future.
This effort was undertaken as part of the WTSC IMS Emergency Servi ces IP Network (IMSESINET) project. As OMA shifted its
focus away from maintaining these critical location enablers, it became necessary to transition the Mobile Location Protocol (MLP/MLS), Secure User Plane Location (SUPL), and LTE Positioning Protocol extensions (LPPe) specifications to a standards development organization capable of ensuring their continued evolution and support.
ATIS’ WTSC IMSESINET provides an ideal new home. The project is jointly led by the WTSC Systems and Networks (SN) Subcommittee and is coordinated with ATIS’ Emergency Services Interconnection Forum’s Next Generation Emergency Services Subcommittee and the Packet Technologies and Systems Committee supporting the development of IMS-based emergency services networks.
WTSC, the North American partner to 3GPP, plays a key role in advancing technologies that support public safety, including the U.S. public warning and wireless emergency alert systems—all of which depend on accurate and reliable location data.
