WTSC: Wireless Technologies and Systems Committee
- Issue: 0094
- Title: Enhanced Location Capabilities in Support of Emergency Calling
- Statement: This Issue Statement addresses the need to consider alternate location determination methods to those described in ATIS-0700028.v002 to support Emergency Services. Additional background may be found in ATIS WTSC Issues 89 and 91 (now closed), which, along with other identified needs, form the basis for this Issue Statement. ATIS-0700028.v002 addresses the use of the NEAD to support the conveyance of dispatchable location, along with geodetic location determined using other location determination technologies. It would be beneficial to the dispatch process if the PSAP could receive both civic/dispatchable and geodetic location information. The modifications to support conveying both the source (i.e., location determination technology used) and results of both types of location should be identified, and if determined to be feasible, incorporated into a new standard on enhanced location capabilities for emergency services, and eventually into ATIS-0700015. Additional support should be considered for other identified improvements, such as other representations of the location information (e.g., more human-digestible forms or what3words.com), and automated location updates (push rather than pull). As the National Emergency Address Database (NEAD) has been decommissioned, and as the focus of ATIS-0700028.v002 is the NEAD, there is no longer a need to update ATIS-0700028.v002.
- Resolution: This Issue was placed into Final Closure following IMSESINET’s approval at its July 28, 2025, meeting to publish ATIS-0700052 Enhanced Location Capabilities in Support of Emergency Calling.
- Status: Final Closure
