ATIS Accelerates Telco API Monetization in North America

ATIS today announced the release of Accelerating Telco API Monetization in North America, a new white paper providing a baseline assessment of how telco APIs enable monetization across North America. It covers exposing network-derived insights and programmable capabilities through standardized frameworks such as CAMARA and GSMA Open Gateway. This groundbreaking analysis evaluates monetization models while accounting for adoption constraints and evolving regulatory expectations.

Telco APIs represent a structural shift in how communications service providers participate in digital value creation. In the past, monetization centered on access and usage-based plans with limited external programmability. With network functions and policy controls becoming increasingly software-defined, APIs now provide standardized interfaces to expose differentiated connectivity, network-derived trust indicators, and managed network behavior to external ecosystems.

“The telecommunications industry is entering a new phase where networks are becoming programmable platforms for digital services,” said ATIS President and CEO Susan Miller. “Telco APIs provide the foundation for exposing network capabilities in a standardized and interoperable way. This report offers a North American perspective on how operators and ecosystem partners are approaching monetization today, while also exploring how APIs may evolve to support AI-driven applications and new digital service models.”

Looking ahead, the study considers how telecom APIs may evolve from discrete network functions to outcome-based services integrated into automated digital workflows. As AI-driven and Model Context Protocol (MCP)-enabled systems emerge, telecom networks could provide trusted data and programmable capabilities to support identity verification, fraud prevention, and secure digital transactions.

The study concludes with recommendations for operators and ecosystem partners on how packaging foundational network APIs into policy-aware, outcome-oriented services can support sustainable long-term monetization while enabling the next generation of agent-ready telecom services.
