ATIS Publishes New Technical Report Supporting Accurate Caller Location During the Transition to Next Generation 9-1-1

Helping ensure seamless interoperability between legacy and IP-based emergency communications systems.

ATIS today announced the publication of NG9-1-1 and Legacy Location Data Mapping, a technical report developed by the ATIS IMS Emergency Services IP Network Location Conveyance Task Force (IMSESINET LCTF). The report provides guidance for maintaining accurate caller location information as emergency communications transition from legacy Enhanced 9-1-1 (E9-1-1) to Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG91-1).

Accurate caller location is one of the most critical elements of emergency communications. This technical report provides the guidance needed to help service providers and public safety organizations maintain consistent location information as they modernize to NG9-1-1. It supports a smoother transition during the evolution to fully IP-based emergency services while helping ensure emergency responders receive the information they need. The report also offers recommendations for mapping legacy Automatic Location Identification (ALI) data to IP-based Presence Information Data Format–Location Object (PIDF-LO) location information, supporting interoperability between legacy public safety systems and NG9-1-1 networks.

Designed to complement existing ATIS and NENA standards, the guidance comprehensively helps communications providers and public safety organizations ensure consistent location handling, preserve operational continuity, and support evolving FCC requirements in this area.

ATIS-0700054, NG9-1-1 and Legacy Location Data Mapping, was developed by the IMSESINET LCTF Subcommittee, a collaboration among the ATIS Emergency Services Interconnection Forum, Packet Technologies and Systems Committee, and Wireless Technologies and Systems Committee.
