Fostering good data governance to help smart cities data deliver greater benefit.
WASHINGTON, DC — ATIS and US Ignite today announced publication of Smart City Data Governance Policies: Creating a Foundation for Data Sharing with City Partners. Smart city data governance policies represent the rules, guidelines and procedures that drive effective data management and data sharing. They are a critical foundation for cities to use in sharing data with other municipalities, the private sector and other partners. It is the sharing of this data that helps cities create value from these assets.
“Forward-looking data governance policies can help smart cities position themselves to reap the opportunities inherent in the future digital economy,” said ATIS Vice President for Technology and Solutions Mike Nawrocki. “While municipal data policies are shaped by local, state and federal laws, regulations and organizational structures, cities are increasingly taking on the characteristics of large enterprise operations. This new ATIS-USIgnite resource is vital to helping cities progress in their digital transformation journey — and extend the benefits of third-party data sharing.”
The white paper delivers insight into cities’ top data policy challenges, gives a detailed set of policy recommendations for addressing them and includes learnings from COVID-19 on the handling of city data. Encompassing data integrity, transparency, privacy and consent, extensible data policies are critical to helping cities make better decisions as they seek to optimize curation and sharing of their data assets.
“As cities go through the evolution of data governance and data policy creation, city leaders require clear and succinct recommendations,” said Praveen Ashok, Technical Program Manager at US Ignite. “It is our hope that this resource initiates and expands the dialog necessary to enable communities to use their data more effectively while maintaining principles of security, transparency and equity.”
