ATIS today announced release of a new standard Energy Efficiency for Telecommunication Equipment: Methodology for Measurement and Reporting of 802.11xx Wi-Fi Access Points, ATIS-0600015.13.2017. This standard provides guidelines on calculating the Telecommunication Energy Efficiency Ratio (TEER) of a Wi-Fi Access Point. By comparing the TEER reports of multiple products that have the same functional capabilities and meet a common set of requirements, a communications network operator, reseller, or end user can select the equipment that best meets their energy efficiency targets.
“This new standard is another of ATIS’ contributions designed to improve the energy efficiency of telecommunications equipment and environments,” said ATIS President and CEO Susan Miller. “With this new resource, operators are better positioned to lower their energy costs and advance industry goals of reducing the environmental impacts of information and communications technology.”
The new ATIS standard defines the test conditions for measurement of data to be used when calculating the TEER of any access point. Common testing requirements on how to measure the energy consumption used as part the TEER calculation can be found in another ATIS document, Energy Efficiency for Telecommunication Equipment: Methodology for Measurement and Reporting – General Requirements (ATIS-0600015).
