Next G Alliance Releases Landmark Report on Integrated Sensing and Communication for 6G Innovation — Enabling a Paradigm Shift in Next-Generation Wireless Networks

ATIS’ Next G Alliance (NGA), the leading North American authority on 6G, today announced the release of a landmark white paper on Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC), a transformative capability expected to define the 6G era. The report explores how ISAC will position 6G as a driver of innovation across industries such as smart homes, transportation, environmental monitoring, healthcare, manufacturing, and public safety.

ISAC introduces sensing as a native function of the communication network. By merging radar-like sensing and wireless communication into a single system, it enables capabilities that extend far beyond today’s networks. This integration empowers applications ranging from detecting the presence, movement, and characteristics of objects within network coverage to enhancing network performance through improved channel awareness.

The new ATIS NGA report, “Integrated Sensing and Communications Readiness Report, Phase I,” delivers the results of NGA’s first dedicated study on ISAC requirements, use cases, and feasibility in both simulated and real-world contexts — with a focus on North American priorities. It also reviews existing ISAC proof-of-concept demonstrations across industry and research while examining sensing architectures, network topologies, link budgets for diverse environments, and options for sensing waveforms.

“ISAC represents a paradigm shift in next-generation wireless networks,” said Jaydee Griffith, Managing Director, Next G Alliance. “By combining sensing and communication, ISAC unlocks new innovation opportunities, particularly for vertical markets, while improving network operations through more efficient use of spectrum and network resources.”

“6G will incorporate ISAC as a foundational capability, unifying communication and sensing within a single, integrated network,” said Amitava Ghosh (Nokia), Chair of the NGA Technology Roadmap Working Group. “This report outlines North American use cases across key industries, examines spectrum needs, technical requirements, waveform design, and link budget considerations for ISAC, and highlights multiple proof-of-concepts that demonstrate its viability as a 6G technology.”
