WASHINGTON — Advances in artificial intelligence are creating a burgeoning range of new network applications, and ATIS has launched an initiative designed to help service providers optimally leverage these technologies to create a more efficient network. As commonly defined, artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the intelligence exhibited by machines or computational systems that perceive the environment and take actions to maximize the chance of success at some defined goal that, in the near past, required human intervention. ATIS’ work is contributing to better understanding how AI will not only make network operations more efficient, but also create new revenue-producing capabilities.
“Throughout the ICT industry there is much excitement on how machine learning and cognitive processing are advancing network transformation,” said ATIS President and CEO Susan Miller. “By applying a cross-operator perspective, ATIS will discover how sophisticated new AI capabilities can be best used to address some of the leading challenges our industry faces today — and, beyond that, spur innovation.”
Among other benefits, advanced AI is making it possible to use data gathered from the network to help systems automatically react to changing traffic patterns, faults and other capacity and performance-affecting events in real time. This means higher network performance with less effort on the part of the service provider. Self-healing systems, for instance, save providers on the effort of having to perform time-consuming manual network engineering, and service providers are just learning how to apply these capabilities. In addition to the benefits of machine learning, ATIS’ work will advance industry knowledge on the most powerful ways AI can be applied, for instance, to improve customer care, security and network performance.
About ATIS
As a leading technology and solutions development organization, the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) brings together the top global ICT companies to advance the industry’s business priorities. ATIS’ 150 member companies are currently working to address 5G, cybersecurity, robocall mitigation, IoT, artificial intelligence-enabled networks, the all-IP transition, network functions virtualization, smart cities, emergency services, network evolution, quality of service, billing support, operations, and much more. These priorities follow a fast-track development lifecycle – from design and innovation through standards, specifications, requirements, business use cases, software toolkits, open source solutions, and interoperability testing.
ATIS is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). ATIS is the North American Organizational Partner for the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), a founding Partner of the oneM2M global initiative, a member of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), as well as a member of the Inter-American Telecommunication Commission (CITEL).
