ATIS’ Next G Alliance Shows the Transformative Social and Economic Benefits of Low-Power Wide-Area Networks and Short-Range Massive Sensors in Rural North America

ATIS’ Next G Alliance (NGA) today announces publication of Societal and Economic Impacts of LPWA and Short-Range Massive Sensors, a white paper that explores the diverse impacts of these two technologies, emphasizing their economic and social benefits in rural North America.  Low-power wide-area (LPWA) network technologies, such as LTE-M, NB-IoT, LoRa, and Sigfox, provide long-range communication capabilities with minimal power consumption, making them ideal for a wide range of applications that can address rural communities’ unique challenges.

Through enabling long-range communication and dense data collection with minimal energy use, LPWAs are making a profound impact in sectors including agriculture, healthcare, and public safety. ATIS’ Next G Alliance Societal and Economic Needs Working Group is exploring how the next generation of low-power sensor networks enabled by 6G will drive both social and economic growth, inspiring a brighter future in regions of rural North America.

“By enabling broad adoption of low-power devices on day one of 6G, users will be able to collect the real-time data it takes to accelerate decision-making to improve their economic bottom line as well as their overall quality of life,” said Next G Alliance Managing Director Jaydee Griffith. “The innovations discussed are but another example of how the NGA is envisioning the next-G world with societal and economic impacts woven in from the start.”

“As the world moves towards increasingly interconnected systems, the role of low-power wide-area networks and massive sensor deployments in rural areas becomes pivotal,” said Amir Gomroki of Ericsson, NGA Societal and Economic Needs Working Group Chair. “The collaboration captured in this white paper underscores our commitment to leveraging next-generation connectivity to foster economic resilience and social advancement in rural North America. It’s an exciting time for innovation, and we’re just beginning to unlock the potential of these transformative technologies.”
