WASHINGTON, DC — ATIS today announced the findings of its testbed activities advancing ICT industry priorities in multiple areas, including mitigating unwanted robocalling, a leading industry and FCC imperative. Among other areas, testing validated the IETF’s STIR protocol with the SHAKEN framework, which enables signing and verification of calling numbers to combat unwanted robocalling. Together STIR and SHAKEN provide the ability to authenticate, digitally sign and verify calling party numbers to help stop suspicious calls before they reach subscribers. The SHAKEN protocol was developed in the ATIS/SIP Forum Joint IP-NNI Task Force.
ATIS originally established the Testbeds structure to provide a neutral space to bring service providers together to validate key aspects of the all-IP network and gain insights delivered through a variety of end-to-end calling scenarios. The Testbed explored a number of areas including Just-in-Time Number Assignment, IP Routing for Toll-Free numbers, and IP routing using enhancements to LERG™ (Local Exchange Routing Guide) data. With this testbeds structure already in place to facilitate the STIR/SHAKEN testing when it began in 2017, STIR/SHAKEN activity will advance, with enhancements to test plans transitioning to the oversight of the ATIS/SIP Forum Joint IP-NNI Task Force. Further testing, as needed, will take place in the ATIS Robocalling Testbed hosted by Neustar to address problems encountered as the industry deploys SHAKEN.
“The goal of the Testbeds Focus Group was to have a place where ICT companies could securely, confidentially and cost-effectively test emerging solutions in a common industry structure, instead of having to duplicate their efforts independently and bear the testing costs on their own,” said ATIS President and CEO Susan Miller. “ATIS is pleased to release the first set of Testbed results — critical to delivering solutions to industry challenges in so many areas.”
The Testbeds Focus Group – Test Plans and Observed Results (ATIS-I-0000067) is available in the ATIS White Paper Center.
