Generative AI is poised to transform customer experiences across industries, including telecommunications. In the telecom domain, generative AI can enable more intuitive, efficient, and personalized service delivery for end-users, while also helping service providers enhance network performance, reliability, and security.
To explore these opportunities, a focused initiative was launched in October 2023 to advance the application of generative AI across telecom networks. The group is currently prioritizing two key areas:
- Wireless Physical-Layer Foundation Model (WPFM): Aims to create a semantic understanding of the physical wireless environment, enabling networks to adapt intelligently based on real-time conditions and user intent, laying the groundwork for truly cognitive, AI-native wireless systems.
- Cognitive Assistant for Network Operators: Combines neural networks and knowledge graphs to deliver explainable, secure, and proactive network intelligence. The assistant analyzes real-time data, performance metrics, and historical patterns to generate actionable recommendations for network optimization, fault prediction, and resource management, while maintaining a strong focus on safety and compliance.
These initiatives are designed to bridge the gap between current AI capabilities and the demands of next-generation telecom infrastructure, ensuring both innovation and operational integrity.
