ATIS 3GPP

The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) unites seven regional standards development organizations (ARIB, ATIS, CCSA, ETSI, TSDSI, TTA, TTC), known as “Organizational Partners (OPs)” to provide a global home for the specification of mobile network technology. As part of its global leadership role, ATIS is the North American founding OP of 3GPP. 3GPP has specified every mobile generation since 3G, and is now developing 5G Advanced and 6G specifications. ATIS is responsible for providing member access to 3GPP for organizations connected to the North American region. ATIS also publishes 3GPP specifications as regional standards. ATIS’ Next G Alliance (NGA) initiative has created a platform to advance North American leadership in 6G, and ATIS works with members to advance the NGA vision in 3GPP and beyond.

Your organization can be a part of setting mobile standards in 3GPP through ATIS membership. As a member of 3GPP through ATIS, you can attend 3GPP meetings, contribute technical proposals to 3GPP, and participate in 3GPP technical decision making. ATIS 3GPP members with sufficient attendance at 3GPP meetings can vote in 3GPP elections and technical votes. Members may propose candidates to run for leadership positions in 3GPP. ATIS members contribute to forming the North American positions that ATIS represents in 3GPP project coordination and management discussions.

3GPP specifications and studies are contribution driven, by ATIS member companies, in Working Groups and at the Technical Specification Group level. 3GPP’s Technical Specification Groups include:

  • Radio Access Networks (RAN)
  • Service & Systems Aspects (SA)
  • Core Network & Terminals (CT)

ATIS member companies hold important leadership positions in 3GPP, including Chairing the SA Working Group. ATIS members also hold Chair and Vice Chair positions in RAN, SA, and CT Working Groups. On a rotating basis with other OPs, ATIS holds the chair of the 3GPP Project Coordination Group.

Completing the work in 3GPP, much of the work to normalize or integrate 3GPP specifications into the North American market takes place in ATIS’ Wireless Technologies and Systems Committee (WTSC). ATIS members may participate in WTSC to address region-specific technical requirements.

Gain 3GPP Membership—Through ATIS

3GPP member companies must take their membership through one of the regional OPs, such as ATIS. Your organization can participate in all of the 3GPP activities by joining as an ATIS 3GPP Individual Member. Taking 3GPP membership through ATIS shows organizational support for North American leadership in 3GPP and connects you with other regional members from the private and public sector.
